This contribution offers a comprehensive review of international trends and methodological approaches for appropriately valuing natural capital and integrating it into corporate management and economic policy decision-making. It draws on the Methodological Assessment of the Impact and Dependence of Business on Biodiversity and Nature’s Contributions to People (the Business and Biodiversity Assessment) released on 9 February 2026 by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). In this assessment, Professor Ryo Kohsaka (Department of Forest Science) served as a Coordinating Lead Author (CLA). Building on the findings of this assessment, the article underscores the necessity of systematically evaluating natural capital—including biodiversity and ecosystem services—and embedding these considerations into economic and corporate decision-making frameworks.
