A science communicator connecting science and society
As an administrator of the One Earth Guardians (OEGs) Development Program, I am responsible for its daily management.
OEGs is an educational program that fosters individuals capable of contributing to the Earth 100 years from now.
Administrators not only plan and implement various educational opportunities but also accompany students in their activities, build collaborations and networks with external stakeholders, and engage in outreach to increase the program’s recognition and supporters.
You might call us versatile 'jack-of-all-trades' with scientific sensibility, and I aspire to be a specialist in this role.
My research background is in environmental ethics.
Through my research activities, I realized the importance of science and society sharing knowledge and opinions to address social challenges such as environmental issues. This led me to build a career as a science communicator, serving as a bridge between science and society.
Educational approach
Training scientists who can take action for the Earth 100 years from now
OEGsstarted in December 2017 within the Faculty and Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
It is a socially collaborative educational and research program that aims to nurture 'One Earth Guardians'—scientists with the research skills, execution ability, and power to engage others—who can identify problems caused by human activities and work toward solutions.
Since 2022, the program has expanded to all faculties and graduate schools, now enrolling students from early undergraduates to doctoral candidates across diverse fields of study.
In OEGs, students build their scientific foundation while gaining opportunities to engage with society and the 'field,' fostering the ability to identify problems, devise solutions, and put them into practice.
For this reason, OEGs emphasizes active learning such as internships (practical training) where students tackle real-world challenges, and dialogue-based workshops where people of diverse backgrounds consider the future together.
Since 2022, a sister program, 'Good Life on Earth' (https://www.one-earth-g.a.u-tokyo.ac.jp/gle/), has also been launched for younger generations, including high school students.
Vision for industry-academia collaboration
Join us in fostering One Earth Guardians
OEGsis not limited to students; it also creates spaces where external participants and faculty members can interact, teach, learn, and think together, making it an educational initiative that extends beyond the university.
Various companies, organizations, and NGOs have already participated, making the program a platform for social collaboration where academia and society work together on problem-solving and human resource development.
One of the program's core activities is the 'One-Erthology' practical internship, an activity that addresses real societal challenges through collaboration among industry, government, and academia.
As a certified subject of One Earth Guardians, it brings together participating companies, organizations, students, and faculty, creating a new arena for co-creation.
(Examples of practical training themes)
・Exploring a sustainable future with forests
・Exploring the potential of microbes for realizing a circular economy
・Can fermentation save food and the planet?
・Considering the well-being of humans, animals, and the Earth
