Seminar Report: Forest Science Seminar on TNFD and Landscape Approach by WWF Japan (Nov. 25)
The Laboratory of Forest Landscape Planning, Department of Forest Science, hosted a seminar inviting Mr. Mutai Hashimoto, Head of the Finance Group, Conservation Department (also in charge of forests in the past), WWF Japan.
The seminar began with an explanation of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), whose initial disclosure recommendations were released in 2023, marking the start of its implementation. Mr. Hashimoto outlined the background to the establishment of TNFD and its aims also highlighting the importance of landscape approach with a case study from Indonesia. He then provided a comprehensive overview of a wide range of topics, including the current state of the world’s forests, the drivers of deforestation, examples of initiatives by Japanese companies, and the role of financial institutions. The seminar also introduced WWF Japan’s research activities and its support for certification and assessment processes related to TNFD.
At a time when companies are increasingly recognizing their dependencies and impacts on nature, assessing related risks, and disclosing their actions, information on TNFD tends to be communicated primarily from governmental and corporate perspectives. In this context, it was highly valuable to learn about recent developments from the independent standpoint and practical experience of an international NGO.
When considering these domestic and international developments, we also recognized the importance of reconsidering whether these activities are truly moving toward a nature-positive direction.
Prof. Ryo Kohsaka moderated the session, who has been serving WWF nature conservation committee over 15 years.
