Tutor Support
General Information
Tutors
Support for international students should mainly focus on their studies and research, and it is best provided through cooperation between academic supervisors, relevant faculty/staff, and tutors. Specific support should be discussed and decided based on the student’s needs and the lab’s situation. If you are unsure, one guideline is whether the student’s studies or procedures would be difficult without the tutor’s help. According to surveys, international students found it helpful when tutors assisted with communication, gave general support for study and research, and provided advice on entrance exams. Support with daily life, explaining information written only in Japanese, and practicing Japanese conversation were also appreciated. However, tutors should not complete procedures or fill out application forms on behalf of students. Especially in the beginning, it may be helpful for tutors to send a greeting email or say hello, to make it easier for students to reach out. If you have questions, please contact the OICE.
